During your Tuscany Shore Excursion, you will be escorted via my comfortable air-conditioned minibus immediately after you have come ashore. It will only take 25 minutes to get to Pisa. We will cross the River Arno, flowing lazily westwards into the Tyrrhenian Sea, and see the architecture of the various palaces lining its banks. Our first stop will be at the second largest square in Pisa, “Piazza dei Cavalieri”. In 1140 the ancient political heart of the city which the architect Giorgio Vasari rebuilt in 1558. We’ll pause here for a few photos, before having the sensation to be catapulted back even further in time to the 11th century.
Our tour will continue through this important university city, as we arrive directly at Piazza dei Miracoli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here we can admire the famous leaning tower, the cathedral of Santissima Annunziata and the 13th century Baptistery. A visit to the leaning tower is an experience not to be missed, along with little shopping in the piazza . You’ll be sure to take home an unforgettable memory of one of Italy’s most important cities.
.
Our tour will now move into the cradle of the Renaissance. Florence is just an hour away from Pisa, and as we drive along the main road linking the two cities. We will pass the medieval village of San Miniato, famous for having once housed Emperor Napoleone Bonaparte and even more famous for its white truffles and in July and August, we’ll feast our eyes on gorgeous fields of sunflowers in bloom.
.
Once in Florence, we will make up our way to the hills and arrive at “ Piazzale Michelangelo”, which overlooks a breathtaking panoramic view of the whole city and obviously an opprtunity to take riveting photos from this scenic view. Descending from the Piazzale Michelangel along the ancient city walls, we will pass through one of the most ancient fortified town doors of the town to reach the square of Santa Croce, which is an ideally evocative place for open-air banquets, festivals, and the historic game called calcio in costume and where many historical figures are buried..
Strolling through the narrow streets of the city, we get to” Piazza del Duomo”, dominated by the cathedral and baptistery in white and green marble, famous for the architectural wonders of Giotto’s bell tower and Brunelleschi’s Dome. Crossing via Calzaiuoli we’ll come to another square that is not to be missed. Piazza della Signoria (The Lord’s Square) by way of Via Calzaiuoli. Around the corner from here, you’ll find the Mercato del Porcellino (named after the statue of a wild boar)
.
Florence is a city just waiting to be explored, with fine shopping everywhere you turn . The San Lorenzo market, or the boutiques ( Gucci, Ferragamo and many more) lining the streets around Piazza della Repubblica, the old roman forum, now an elegant spot with famous caffes, where you can stop off in your free time to rest your feet. At this point, we’ll sadly have to say goodbye to Florence in order to make our way back to the ship in Livorno on time, hoping that this fantastique tour will be unforgettable to you all.
